- 13th Annual Gameday Dual 2004 Wolverbuck -
- Boat Dedication Honoring Gold Medallist, Bryan Volpenhien -

HISTORY

In 1992 The Ohio State University Crew Club and the University of Michigan Crew first meet in a dual race. Born out of the historic football rivalry that exists between these two fine institutions; it was decided that the racing would occur on the same day as the football game, hence the name GameDay Dual. The teams would travel to whoever hosted the football game for what has become a classic race. Contested every year since 1992, the winner of this dual is awarded the coveted point trophy, an oar painted half one teams colors, and half the other. In addition to winning the points trophy the winner also gets to rename the race for the following year, with these name being either "WolverBuck" or "BuckWolver". With the exception of "The Boat Race" which occurs between rowing powerhouses Oxford and Cabridge every year in England, this would have to be one of the most watched rowing events in the world. People line every bridge and piece of land to get a view of the racing.

Since it's inception in 1992 the Ohio State Crew Club has only clenched the OAR twice, 92 & 95. Four years ago, 2001, was the closest that the team has come to winning since then, with a win in the Varsity 8's race.

THIS YEAR'S RACE

This year the competition is set to start at 8:00 AM with the Novice 8's event. The 3rd Varsity 8 will be next, followed by the JV 8. At 9:00 AM, after a short boat dedication ceremony, the Varsity 8's will launch for the final race of the day.

The winner of the dual goes home with the coveted Trophy Oar. A point system is used to determine the winner. The winner of the Varsity 8 get's 10 points, the JV 8 get's 8, and the 3rd 8 and Novice eight each get 6 points. The team with the most points at the end of the day wins the dual.

BOAT DEDICATION

The Buckeye Rowing Alumni Association has donated a new Dirigo TR-3 Heavyweight 8. The boat will be named the "Bryan Volpenhein" after the former Ohio State Oarsman ('97) and 2004 Olympic Gold Medallist (Men's Eight). Bryan, who has represented Ohio State across the country and around the world with the national team will be in attendance for the event. The boat dedication will take place just before the Varsity 8 launches for the final race of the day.

We recommend parking in one of the $10 lots or garages on campus. Parking is available on the streets and lots of the Agricultural Campus west of the river, west campus near Kenny Road and Woody Hayes Drive, the Fawcett Center on Olentangy River Rd., Garage B on College Rd just south of Woodruff Ave, and Garage H at 1640 Cannon Dr (south end of garage). A shuttle will provide transportation from the west side of the footbridge to the west campus lots beginning 3 hours before kickoff, providing rides back to cars after racing, but unfortunately won’t be running prior to boat racing. Anyone with a valid OSU parking pass may park in the Coffey Road parking lot on the west side of the footbridge.
